Experiencing Live Performance

by Neal Raskin on September 21, 2010

There is something to say for experiencing something firsthand. Have you ever seen a video of a Lady Gaga concert on YouTube? Or have you ever listened to the Chicago Symphony through a set of small computer speakers? If you have, you’ll understand that experiencing something through a recording cannot even come close to replicating the experience you would get from being there first hand.

If it is the case that live concerts and performances are so much better, I’m sure most of you will agree that we want our students to get out there and experience these things firsthand. This will accomplish a couple of things. First, it will give them exposure to performers outside of the school setting and contribute to their musical knowledge and perspective. And secondly, I think it is very important for inspiration. Providing our students with “WOW” moments is something we should continually work at. Maybe seeing a live orchestral concert is all a student needs to become hooked on performing, or while watching another band from the conference playing a piece that they had only heard a recording of becomes inspired to learn more about a particular composer.

Obviously some of this is idealistic and we cannot always provide these opportunities for students; but we can do more than posting a flyer on the crowded bulletin board. In what ways have you been able to give your students “WOW” moments?
