There are several collections of music quotes around the web, the ones listed below I believe are significant music education quotes. This is in no way a complete statement about music education, but if you resonate with some of these quotes, ideas, and philosophies, I encourage you to look at two of my favorite music education resources. The quote from Eugene Corporon is borrowed from Teaching Music Through Performance in Band, Vol I, Unrevised. All of the books in the series are tremendous assets to all wind band educators, and series also exist for choir and orchestra teachers as well. The other resource is Intelligent Music Teaching, by Robert Duke. Duke is a researcher and educator at University of Texas at Austin where he is the director of the Center for Music Learning. His book is incredibly insightful; his clarity of thought is astounding, and extremely beneficial for the practicing music educator.

Music Education Quotes:

  • “I always loved music; whoso has skill in this art is of good temperament, fitted for all things. We must teach music in schools; a schoolmaster ought to have skill in music, or I would not regard him.” Martin Luther
  • “I am a strong advocate of the importance of approaching learning as a process, not a product. In music especially, the process becomes the product. A process-oriented approach must be thorough, effective, thought-provoking, enlightening, expressive, and above all creative. Music is designed to be innately enjoyable. It is incumbent upon us as teachers of music to amplify that joy!” – Eugene Corporon
  • “Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” – Berthold Auerach
  • “Our priorities are beauty and expressiveness. And students must come to believe that a melody isn’t learned until it’s played beautifully and expressively.” – Robert Duke
  • “I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.” – Billy Joel
  • “Music can change the world because it can change people.” – Bono
    • “Music is the movement of sound to reach the soul for the education of its virtue.” – Plato
    • “Music when healthy, is the teacher of perfect order, and when depraved, the teacher of perfect disorder.” – John Ruskin
    • “I must study politics and war, that my sons may study mathematics and philosophy…in order to give their children the right to study painting, poetry, music and architecture.” – John Quincy Adams
    • “Art is a nation’s most precious heritage. For it is in our works of art that we reveal to ourselves and to others the inner vision which guides us as a nation. And where there is no vision, the people perish.” – Lyndon B. Johnson
    • “Music is about communication, creativity, and cooperation, and by studying music in schools, students have the opportunity to build on these skills, enrich their lives, and experience the world from a new perspective.” – Bill Clinton

    1. Thanks for these quotations. You have helped me a lot. I am currently making the piano recital program of my daughter’s piano students. I am sure it will help motivate them more to learn more about music. God bless you.
